Rootstock Summary

At Lynwood we offer a range of different rootstocks, including both clonal and seedling rootstocks. A clonal rootstock is grown from a cutting and so is genetically identical to its parent (be it Dusa®, Bounty® or Astro - formerly SR1).

Clonal rootstocks are essential in a replant situation or when planting into heavy, low oxygen soils. In virgin soils they also provide significant tree health advantages over the life of the orchard.

A seedling rootstock is the result of male/female fertilisation producing a fruit and a tree is propagated from the resulting seed. The root system from a seedling has a wide genetic variation (up to 400%) causing variation in the field.

The table below summarises the key characteristics of the rootstocks Lynwood offers.  These rootstocks can perform differently with different soil types and at different sites, so we recommend you contact one of our technical team to discuss matching the best rootstock to your specific situation.

Comments The world-wide industry standard. Ideal for BOP virgin sites. Not ideal for highly precocious fruiting scions like GEM and Maluma Excellent in all conditions. Has the ability to thrive in heavier soils. Strong in replant situations Excellent in all conditions. Has the ability to thrive in heavier soils. Strong in replant situations High tolerance to chloride. Reputedly very good in wet soils, and probably needs this to help control vigour. The original clonal rootstock. Excellent in virgin soils but does not have the vigour or Phytophthora tolerance for a replant situation. The rootstock on which the NZ industry is based. Good all-round rootstock in superior soils. Poor in replant situations. Variability that comes with seedling rootstocks.
